The 19-year-old graphic design student was told in a video call with the Queen's Lord Chamberlain that his design had been chosen as the winner. Edward Roberts from Southwell in Nottinghamshire said he felt "over the moon" that his design would adorn the Queen's Platinum Jubilee celebrations next year. The teenager's entry, a modern take on the iconic St Edward’s Crown, was chosen following a competition hosted by Buckingham Palace and the Victoria & Albert Museum.
Mr Roberts told the Lord Chamberlain he had not expected to win the contest.
He said: "I am over the moon.
"I can’t believe it!
"It’s an honour to compete in the competition, and I nowhere near expected to win it, but it’s amazing!”
The young creative talked the Palace official through the process behind his entry, which featured a stylized crown and incorporated the number 70.
“Art and Design have always been passions of mine, from a young age," he explained.
"Looking forward, I hope to make a career out of them."
Mr Roberts added: "The crown is a very recognizable figure but I can take a very modern twist on that very classical emblem.
"So I was just thinking of ways I could make the crown a modern twist.
"So I came up with a continuous line drawing," he continued.
"And I thought that represented the continuation of the crown as the Monarch."
The Queen's Platinum Jubilee will be celebrated in June 2022 with a four-day bank holiday weekend.
