Emergency services were called to the Westbound carriageway of the M8 near junction 31 at Westferry Interchange at around 5am on Sunday near Bishopton. There have been also unconfirmed reports that up to eight people are injured.
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Police were called around 5.05am following the report of a one-vehicle road crash on the M8 Westbound and junction 31.
"Emergency services are in attendance and the road is currently closed in both directions.
"Enquiries are currently ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident."
The M8 is closed in both directions with a diversion in place from St James Interchange at Junction 29.
Travellers are being urged to avoid the area.
