Boris Johnson has fallen nearly 40 points in a survey after what has proved another trying month for the Government.

       A new cabinet league table by Conservative Home found that the Prime Minister had again lost popularity points and was only just in positive territory for net satisfaction.

       The survey, which the website aims to be one of Tory party members, for July 2021 found that Mr Johnson’s recent U-turn over self-isolating cost him 36 points, whereas Rishi Sunak, the Chancellor, who also tried to avoid self-isolating, was not hugely affected after coming into contact with the Health Secretary who had tested positive for Covid-19.

       On the day that Sajid Javid tested positive for the virus, he had been in contact with both Mr Johnson and Mr Sunak. However, instead of having to isolate for ten days, Downing Street announced that the pair would take part in a pilot scheme allowing them to avoid self-isolation and continue working. After a backlash from Tory MPs, business leaders and the public, however, the Government was forced into a humiliating U-turn in just over two hours.

       Meanwhile, Home Secretary Priti Patel has also fared badly in the poll, having lost 20 points, which is believed to be down to her handling of the migrant crisis.

       This is compared to Dominic Raab, the Foreign Secretary, and Liz Truss, International Trade Secretary, who have retained the same positions in the league that they had in June.

       It comes after an Ipsos MORI survey recently showed that public satisfaction with Mr Johnson and his party had fallen to a nine-month low. The survey, which was conducted after Matt Hancock resigned as Health Secretary following revelations about an affair with an aide, found that 55 per cent of adults were dissatisfied with the Government.
