The wildfires that have been ravaging the Mediterranean country entered yesterday evening the royal park and cemetery near the royal palace - once the summer retreat of the Greek sovereign. The Friends of Tatoi Association described the situation as "extremely critical", as reported by historian and journalist Oskar Aanmoen.

The senior correspondent at Royal Central wrote on Twitter yesterday evening: "Tatoi Palace is now threatened by fires.

"Greek media reports that the fire now has invaded the interior of the royal park & the royal cemetery.

"According to the president of the Association of Friends of Tatoi the situation is extremely critical."

The damage suffered by the cemetery is not yet known.

Greek media reported large parts of the royal park surrounding the palace have been completely devastated by the fire.

Firefighters were deployed yesterday to the garden of Tatoi Palace and fought the advancing threat for hours.

In the early hours of this morning, the wind changed and the fire began to move away from Tatoi Palace.

At the moment, firefighters believe the historic residence is no longer in immediate danger.

This positive development came after on August 4, the Greek Minister of Culture travelled to the palace with Prince Nikolaos, the third child of the last King and Queen of Greece, to see first-hand how quick the forest fire was travelling towards the historic residence.

On August 5 the Culture Ministry ordered to evacuate the items from the royal collection and documents from the Palace of Tatoi for safety.

Tatoi cemetery is a private cemetery located on the south end of the royal estate and hosts the graves of 20 members of the Greek Royal family.

Among the royals buried there, there are the parents of the last Greek King, Constantine II: King Paul I, who reigned between 1947 and 1964, and his wife Queen Frederica of Hanover.

The late King was the first cousin of Prince Philip, born in Greece in 1921.

Despite being born on the Greek island of Corfu and having received the title of Prince of Greece and Denmark at birth, Prince Philip only lived in the country for a few months before his family was exiled after King Constantine I was forced to abdicate in 1922.

Nevertheless, the late Duke remembered his ties with Greece throughout his life and invited King Paul to his wedding with then Princess Elizabeth in November 1947.

However, the Greek monarch was too ill to travel across Europe at the time and was represented at Westminster Abbey by his wife Queen Frederica.

Paul's wife herself had links with the British Royal Family as she was a descendent of Queen Victoria.

The wildfires have been devastating Greece and neighbouring Turkey for days.

This morning, thousands of people fled their homes on the outskirts of Athens and hundreds more were evacuated by boat from the nearby island of Evia.

People living in the city of Athens have been told to remain indoor to shield themselves from the toxic fumes sent over the capital by strong winds and explosions of high voltage power lines.

At least nine people have been taken to hospital with varying degrees of injuries, including two volunteer firefighters, according to local health officials.

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said emergency services faced a difficult night with westerly winds set to strengthen.

In a special television address, he urged people to comply with evacuation orders and avoid unnecessary travel.

He said: "We are dealing with unprecedented conditions as many days of heatwave have turned the whole country into a powder keg."
