Rising gas prices and food shortages have led to the upcoming winter being dubbed the "winter of discontent".

       BP has already had to ration fuel and shut stations due to a shortage of HGV drivers and soaring energy prices have caused a number of energy companies to go bust.

       Ministers have faced pressure to relax immigration rules to attract more HGV drivers into the country.

       Soldiers are also said to have been put on standby in case they are needed to drive petrol tankers in extreme cases.
