Three people, a pilot and two passengers, have been taken to hospital. One of those injured was airlifted to hospital by Great North Air Ambulance.

       The service said: “We had a doctor and paramedic on board, and we got to the scene quickly from our base in Eaglescliffe.”

       An investigation into what took place has been launched.

       A Teesside Airport spokesman said: “We can confirm an incident occurred today involving a light aircraft at 09:39.

       "A pilot and two passengers were onboard and have been taken to hospital.

       "Our runway will remain closed until further notice while a thorough investigation is carried out.

       “We would like to thank the emergency services, on site staff for their quick response.”

       Durham police confirmed they at the site following the incident.

       They said: “Officers are currently on scene at Teesside International Airport following an incident involving a light aircraft.

       “The runway is currently closed while an investigation is carried out.”

       On dtvmovements.com, a website which tracks plane movements, stated: “A resident light aircraft has had an accident on the runway (0935), the airport is currently closed.

       "We will give no further until announced by the airport.”

       Speaking to Teesside Live airport staff said the site is “indefinitely closed”, but were unable to provide more details.

       Cleveland Fire Brigade confirmed to the paper it has not been called, to respond to the incident, thus far.

       According to the Flightradar24 website a flight from the Faro Islands, which had been headed for the airport, was diverted to Newcastle.

       Flights had been scheduled to leave Teesside Airport for Mallorca, Faro, London Heathrow and Newquay later today.
