It's not Brexit! David Lammy labelled a 'simpleton' for outrageous fuel shortage claim

After David Lammy, Labour MP for Tottenham claimed Brexit was the reason for the fuel shortages across the country, Mr Daubney issued a furious attack against the Shadow Justice Secretary. Mr Lammy revealed he experienced a two-hour queue for petrol on September 26. He said: "My wife and I drove 5 miles and queued for 2 hours to get petrol at 6.30 this morning.

"I pray for emergency workers and those who need fuel in the days ahead.

"This is on you Boris Johnson and your vacuous Brexit deal."

In response, Mr Daubney said: "Your daily reminder that anyone who believes fuel shortages are due to Brexit is a simpleton, incapable of the most basic multi-variant analysis

"Today’s nomination: Step forward, Mr Lammy."

In a further tweet, Mr Daubney called on the MP to take public transport for his journey as he lives in London.

He added: "He lives in London. Do what the rest of us have to do: take public transport.

"He will be back to his free MP taxis today, anyhow."

Due to the pandemic, many haulage drivers left the industry due to issues caused by travel restrictions and stay-at-home orders.

Lockdowns have also caused training centres to be closed which has contributed to a shortage of drivers across Europe.

Due to this, BP was forced to close some of its petrol stations due to a lack of drivers who can transport fuel into the UK.

However, companies have stressed there is no fuel shortage despite the large numbers of drivers queueing at petrol stations across the country.

The head of the motoring association, Edmund King claimed panic-buying had been the main cause of the shortages.

He said: "There is no shortage of fuel and thousands of forecourts are operating normally with just a few suffering temporary supply chain problems.

"Fridays and the weekend always tend to be busier on forecourts as drivers either combine filling up with shopping runs, prepare for weekend trips or refuel for the start of the new working week.

“Drivers should not fill up outside their normal routines because, even if the occasional petrol station is temporarily closed, others just down the road will be open.

"It is now clear that there have been occasional delays over recent weeks that have been managed with hardly anyone noticing.

       "This was a manageable problem.”

While similar issues have been experienced across Europe, the UK has partly suffered due to post-Brexit immigration rules.

In order to ease issues, Boris Johnson announced 5,000 visas in order to encourage foreign drivers back to the UK.

The visas will work on a temporary basis of three months.

To entice further numbers into the industry, Mr Johnson has also claimed firms must offer their workers a pay rise and improve working conditions.
