Lady Louise Windsor poised to make life-changing decision this year

The 17-year-old, who is the daughter of Prince Edward and Sophie, Countess of Wessex received exams results for her AS-levels this week to complete the first year of her A-level qualification. She reportedly studied English, History, Politics and Drama at a private school in Ascot and though she was unable to sit exams due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, Louise’s grades have been teacher-assessed. Last year the Queen’s granddaughter’s GCSE results remained private and Buckingham Palace have so far not publicly released the AS grades either.

Louise will continue her education next year to complete her full A-levels and then has parental permission to decide whether she wants to pursue a life as a working royal or continue to university.

Her mother Sophie, however, hopes her “clever” daughter will continue her education.

However, it is possible that Louise may decide to take up royal titles and become a full-time working royal.

Louise and her 13-year-old brother James, Viscount Severn, are both entitled to HRH titles, yet Sophie and Edward decided instead to style them with titles appropriate for that of the children of an Earl.

In an interview last year, Sophie told the Sunday Times: “We try to bring them up with the understanding they are very likely to have to work for a living.

“Hence we made the decision not to use HRH titles.

“They have them and can decide to use them from 18, but I think it’s highly unlikely.”

Sophie also stressed that she would like to see Louise go to university.

She said: “I wouldn’t force her, but if she wants to.

“She’s quite clever, so I think probably, whereas James I don’t know.”

Edward was educated at Cambridge University and then pursued a career in the entertainment industry, as the joint managing director and head of production at the ill-fated Ardent productions.

However, since Prince Harry and Meghan Markle stepped down from their royal roles, the prince has become a more prominent working member of the Royal Family.

Edward’s wife Sophie trained as a secretary at West Kent College, Tonbridge before working in public relations.

Sophie, speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live, reiterated her desire for her daughter to go to university.

She said: "I would hope that she can go on with her studies, which I think she probably will want to do, and I hope that she and her friends will protect her from anything that somebody might want to do.

"But I have to let her live her life - it's not mine to live.

“I can only equip her the best that I can, and then she has to make her own choices.

“But I hope for the next few years, at least, she will still be able to be as private as she wants to be."

Louise’s cousins Prince William and Harry joined the armed forces before committing to royal service, while Princess Beatrice, Princess Eugenie, Peter Phillips and Zara Tindall have all pursued their own careers.

Daily Mirror royal editor Russell Myers emphasised the decision is down to Louise on Pod Save the Queen, a podcast hosted by Ann Gripper.

He said: “Sophie has been doing her role diligently for the past couple of decades and only now is possibly getting the recognition that she deserves ? and Edward is a very popular figure.

“I think the children won't necessarily have a front and centre role to play within royal life but Sophie said recently that that would be their decision to make, wouldn't it, once they come to a certain age.

“So I think you’ll see a lot more of the Wessexes coming out in future months.”
