The foreign secretary is addressing the Foreign Affairs Select Committee today from 2pm reflecting on the US-led coalition withdrawal from Afghanistan. The Taliban declared victory in Afghanistan on August 15 after a blistering string of successes which saw the militant group captured 20 provincial capitals in less than two weeks. The rise of the Taliban has largely been attributed to the US forces' chaotic withdrawal under a deal brokered by former president Donald Trump but arranged and carried out by current president Joe Biden.
The sudden Taliban victory prompted hundreds of thousands of people to storm Kabul airport in a desperate attempt to flee the new administration.
ISIS-K, a local faction of the internationally detested terrorist group ISIS, targeted these crowds and detonated two explosions.
The bombs went off outside the Baron Hotel and the Abbey Gate of Kabul airport killing 170 Afghans and 13 US military personnel.
Of the 13 military personnel killed, all of them were 31 years old or younger with five of them only 20 - the same age as the Afghanistan conflict.
