Coronavirus in Canada Ontario reported 164 new infections and nine deaths from COVID-19 today, and also reported 80 additional cases from 2020 that were missed due to a data review. Seventy-eight per cent of adults in the province have at least one COVID-19 vaccine dose. Meanwhile, a public-health unit in Niagara will repeat vaccines for 205 people because of a mix-up where some attendees to a vaccine clinic received a harmless saline injection instead. Quebec reported 67 new infections and no deaths from COVID-19 today, with only 705 active infections – the lowest figure since March 21, 2020. The province says 81.8 per cent of those 12 and older have received their first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine. British Columbia health officials say there are COVID-19 outbreaks in five long-term care homes in the province. Canada has shipped COVID-19 vaccines to 134 of its diplomatic missions – including many countries where supply is scarce, prompting criticism from some that it’s contributing to a two-tier system of access.

While 69 per cent of Canadians have at least one COVID-19 shot, less than 3 per cent of Africans have been vaccinated – and in some of the poorest countries, that figure is only 1 per cent. Global Affairs Canada says it has shipped vaccines to about 75 per cent of its embassies and other missions abroad with priority given to places where Canadian-approved vaccines are inaccessible. Health activists say the wealthy countries are creating a parallel distribution system, ensuring their staff have full access to vaccines in lower-income countries where local people have little or no access. “This is vaccine apartheid, and this is shameful,” said Fatima Hassan, a human-rights lawyer and founder of Health Justice Initiative, a South African group. Coronavirus around the world Last year, the coronavirus and a lockdown aimed at stopping it saw millions of people in India thrown out of jobs in cities and towns and forced back to their villages. As a result, the country’s poorest are now further in debt. Olympic organizers are contemplating reduced limits for fan attendance while grappling with the critical problem of a low vaccination rate in Japan, and the probability that holding Olympics events will encourage people to also visit bars, restaurants and use public transportation. The Australian Grand Prix has been cancelled for second year in a row due to COVID-19. Coronavirus and business As the coronavirus encourages house-hunters to search beyond the big cities, pressures on farmland are increasing.

Canada is one of the top three exporters of wheat, pork and pulses, according to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), meaning the scramble for land could have global repercussions as commodity prices rise in tandem with the world’s population.
