Boris Johnson teases MPs as he hints major new trade deal to be unveiled this week

The Prime Minister teased MPs an announcement on a new pact can be expected in the coming days as he took questions in the Commons. His comments suggest a long-anticipated deal with New Zealand will be unveiled imminently.

International Trade Secretary Liz Truss has been negotiating hard with her opposite number in recent months as the two countries look to thrash out the details of a deal.

A deadline of August was originally set for an agreement but no announcement was made before the month ended last week.

Speaking in Parliament this afternoon, Mr Johnson indicated a pact had now been struck as he boasted of the UK's influence around the world post-Brexit.

He said: "We have our own sanctions policy, we are able to set up embassies and delegations around the world, in the south pacific, in Africa. We are opening up.

"And we are doing free trade deals, I think a total of 63 so far.

"And who knows, maybe there will even be another one this week."

Tory MPs responded with a chorus of "oohs" and "ahhs" as Mr Johnson hinted at the deal.

He made his remarks after Labour MP Peter Kyle attacked the Government for weakening the UK's influence on the world stage with Brexit.

Making reference to Joe Biden's decision to pull out of Afghanistan despite UK pleas not to, Mr Kyle said: "The Prime Minister has turned his back on the EU, Washington has turned its back on him.

"Can he tell us, since he became Prime Minister, and stood on a platform of 'global Britain', where does Britain have more influence than before he became Prime Minister?"

Mr Johnson retorted the UK was now more influential "virtually everywhere" after quitting the EU.

The UK already does £2.3billion worth of trade each year with Wellington, with the new agreement set to boost exports.

Tariffs as high as 10 percent on products such as chocolate, gin and clothing are set to be slashed.

At the same time, Britons will benefit from a cut in prices on high quality New Zealand products such as wine, food and drink being sold in UK supermarkets.

Ms Truss has previously described New Zealand and the UK as "natural partners united by modern values".

She said a free trade deal is "a win-win for both countries".

Speaking of a deal, she added: "It would also be an important step towards our accession to CPTPP, helping the UK gain access to 11 of the world’s biggest and fastest-growing economies across the Pacific region and opening doors to dynamic markets across the world."

The CPTPP (Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership) is a free trade area worth around £9trillion.

Earlier this year the UK officially started talks to join the group.
