Speculation had been high that Eugenie could act as a peacemaker between the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, who are living in California, and the royals. But royal commentator Charles Rae warned he is not sure if there is anything she could do to repair the rift.

       Mr Rae told Express.co.uk: "Best of luck to her. I mean, that’s a hell of a mountain she’s got to climb.

       "Eugenie gets on well with other members of the Royal Family.

       "I mean what could she possibly say to the Queen and other members of the Royal Family that would smooth that path.

       "This rift is not going to go away.

       "If I were poor old Eugenie I’d stay right out of it and just not try and do anything.

       "I’m not actually sure if there’s anything she could do."

       Eugenie, who lives at the Sussexes' former Windsor home Frogmore Cottage, is understood to remain close to the couple in the wake of Megxit.

       And she was friends with Meghan before her romance with Harry began.

       An insider previously told the Telegraph: “Eugenie knows them better than any of the royals in a way. She was there from the beginning.”

       Earlier this month, Eugenie posted a show of support for Meghan's 40x40 birthday initiative on her Instagram.

       The Princess revealed she was giving 40 minutes of her time to help mentor a woman returning to the workplace after the pandemic, referring to the Duchess as "dear Meghan".

       Tensions between the Sussexes and the Royal Family have been apparent in the wake of Megxit.

       Harry and Meghan made a series of explosive claims about the royals in their Oprah Winfrey interview in March, including racism allegations.

       The Duke also laid bare his rifts with his father Prince Charles and older brother Prince William.

       And he went on to make further controversial comments about his family in the following weeks.

       Harry and Meghan quit royal duties in March 2020 for a new life in America.

       They are living in a mansion in Montecito with their two-year-old son Archie and daughter Lili, who was born in May.
