Lady Louise Windsor 'like another daughter' to Queen: 'Extremely close'

It has been well documented that Lady Louise Windsor – daughter of Prince Edward and Sophie Countess of Wessex – has a close relationship with the Queen. it was reported this week that the 17-year-old was given special access to a special collection of rare artwork at Balmoral Castle. A source previously told the Sun: "Because of her obvious artistic skill, the Queen allowed Louise to look through some of the collection of Queen Victoria’s Highlands sketches which are kept at Balmoral but are rarely dug out these days."

In April, reports also revealed the close relationship the young royal has had not just with The Queen, but also Prince Charles and Prince Philip.

Louise's closeness with Her Majesty could be due to her growing up just 20 minutes away from Windsor Castle.

As a result of this, the Wessex grandchildren have shared more quality time with their grandparents than their much older cousins.

When Louise was born in 2003, The Queen and Philip had been grandparents for 26 years.

Her arrival represented a new generation of Royal grandchildren, and a new chance for The Queen and the Duke to be hands-on grandparents.

Royal expert, Ingrid Seward, told the Telegraph: “They were the grandchildren that they saw the most.

"While the older ones were seen less frequently, this little girl was there every weekend.”

Louise's mum Sophie once revealed in an interview that her daughter didn't always understand The Queen's prominence when she was very young, saying: “Mummy, people keep on telling me that grandma is the Queen.”

Ms Seward added: “Windsor was always Edward’s favourite place, even before his marriage. They live nearby and because the Queen is so fond of Sophie, they spent a lot of time at the castle.”

One royal insider summed up just how important Louise has been to The Queen, especially after the death of Princess Margaret.

They said: “Sophie became a real source of support for the Queen. It was after then that we increasingly saw pictures of Sophie accompanying the Queen to church.”

Ms Seward also said that The Queen's special bond with her granddaughter started right from birth.

She added: “Around the time of Lady Louise’s birth, the Queen took Sophie very much under her wing. She is like another daughter to the Queen; they remain extremely close.

“There are shades of the young Elizabeth. There is something about her – a capability. She’s obviously a very gentle young woman.

“Remember Princess Eugenie’s wedding, when she was a special attendant – she was very sweet and helped the little bridesmaids and her dress blew up. But she handled it really well.”

Louise's future role in the Royal Family remains unclear as Charles eyes a slimmed-down monarchy.

Charles plans to reduce the monarchy to a team of just eight key members, all senior working royals, according to previous reports.

A possible reason could be for financial purposes.

Reducing the number of royals who undertake official duties would also mean reducing who is funded by the sovereign grant, the public funds used to support them, The Times reports.

The Royal Family could face an estimated £32.67million shortfall due to the impact of the pandemic, Forbes reported in September last year.

However, the royals have "no intention of asking for extra funding," The Queen's financial officer Sir Michael Stevens said in a statement at the time.
