2021-07-19 00:00:00.0     环球邮报-加拿大     原网页

Good evening, here are the coronavirus updates you need to know tonight.

       Top headlines:

COVID-19 vaccine inequity: No one expected that a vaccine gap between the global rich and poor would be this bad The Biden administration is blaming Facebook for spreading misinformation about COVID-19 vaccines, prompting the social media platform to fire back With Tokyo under a state of COVID-19 emergency, cheering, hugs and talking at dinner will be missing from the Olympics – making this year’s Games stranger than any in history In the past seven days, 2,452 cases were reported, down 33 per cent from the previous seven days. There were 62 deaths announced, down 21 per cent over the same period. At least 454 people are being treated in hospitals and 1,392,005 others are considered recovered.

Coronavirus in Canada In Alberta, festivals, concerts and other events may be legally free to operate as they normally would, but some organizers are sticking with guidelines designed to stem the spread of the coronavirus. Ontario recorded 177 new COVID-19 cases today, just days after the province eased some restrictions on gyms, cinemas, indoor dining and large gatherings. The scale of vaccine inequity, the stockpiling of unused doses, and the lack of a viable global plan to solve a global problem has shocked health officials, though it wasn’t the first time.

Inoculations go begging in the United States while Haiti, a short plane ride away, received its first delivery July 15 after months of promises – 500,000 doses for a population more than 11 million. Canada has procured more than 10 doses for every resident, while Sierra Leone’s vaccination rate just cracked 1 per cent on June 20. There was a global purchase plan to provide vaccines for poorer countries, but it was so flawed and underfunded that it couldn’t compete in the cutthroat competition to buy supply. International travel: France will allow international travellers who have had AstraZeneca’s Indian-manufactured vaccine into the country, and that includes Canadian travellers.

Tokyo Olympics: The Canadian government still hasn’t publicly decided if a federal delegation is heading to Tokyo.

Coronavirus in Tokyo The Games have become a microcosm for the strange state of the world at the moment and the intensity of COVID-19 anxiety that remains – particularly in Japan. Two athletes living in the Olympic village have tested positive for COVID-19 – highlighting the herculean task organizers face to keep the virus contained while the world’s biggest sports event plays out. Another Olympian, U.S. tennis player Coco Gauff, has tested positive for the coronavirus, forcing her to pull out of the Games. Official Olympic sponsors face an especially fraught environment, with large swaths of the globe still paralyzed by the pandemic and enormous uncertainty over how receptive people will be to traditionally upbeat marketing messages. Coronavirus around the world Indonesia has become the new pandemic epicentre, surpassing India and Brazil to become the country with the world’s highest count of new infections. U.S. Surgeon-General Vivek Murthy is raising concerns as the number of COVID-19 cases rise with millions still unvaccinated. And, Los Angeles County has brought back an indoor mask mandate as COVID-19 cases rise. Meanwhile, a U.S. appeals court blocked a proposed ruling that said the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention could not enforce its coronavirus cruise ship rules. More than 100,000 people protested across France against compulsory vaccines for health care workers and other pandemic-related concerns. Britain has opted against mass COVID-19 vaccinations for all children and teenagers, and will instead offer the vaccines to children between 12 and 15 who are deemed vulnerable to COVID-19 or who live with adults who are immunosuppressed. Tens of thousands of vaccinated Muslim pilgrims circled Islam’s holiest site in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, on Sunday, while wearing masks and physical distancing. Coronavirus and business Facebook called for the Biden administration to stop “finger-pointing,” in response to accusations that the social media giant was responsible for spreading misinformation about COVID-19 vaccines.

The social network detailed how it had clamped down on lies about the vaccines, which officials have said led people to refuse to be vaccinated. While President Joe Biden had set a goal of getting 70 per cent of Americans vaccinated by July 4, which the White House fell short of, “Facebook is not the reason this goal was missed,” says Guy Rosen, Facebook’s vice-president of integrity.
