Queen's full name has special links to royal ancestors - although she rarely uses it

The monarch's full name which is on her birth certificate is Elizabeth Alexandra Mary. Although the Queen rarely uses the moniker in full, it has touching links to her royal ancestors.

Her Majesty's first name, Elizabeth, is after the Queen Mother, who was also called Elizabeth.

The Queen's family nickname came from her first name as when she was a toddler she could not pronounce Elizabeth properly.

Her grandfather King George V called her Lilibet after her attempts to say her name.

The sweet nickname was used by her beloved late husband Prince Philip.

The Queen's first middle name, Alexandra, is believed to be a nod to her great-grandmother Queen Alexandra, who was the wife of King Edward VII.

Alexandra died in 1925 less than a year before the Queen was born.

Her Majesty's second middle name, Mary, is thought to be in honour of her grandmother Queen Mary, who was the wife of King George V. She died in 1953.

According to the Royal Family's website, royals often do not use a surname.

Before 1917, members of the Royal Family only had the name of the house or dynasty to which they belonged.

In 1917, George V adopted Windsor as the surname for his family, as well as the name of his house.

However, in 1960, the Queen and the Duke and Edinburgh decided they would like their direct descendants to use Mountbatten-Windsor as their surname.

The change reflected Philip's surname, Mountbatten.

Unless Charles makes further changes when he becomes King, his house will continue to be Windsor and his grandchildren will use the surname Mountbatten-Windsor.

Earlier this year, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle opted to name their daughter Lilibet after the Queen's family nickname.
