Coronavirus in Canada In Ontario, long-term care homes are calling for mandatory COVID-19 vaccines for their staff, echoing recommendations from the province’s medical and nursing associations. Quebec will begin testing a COVID-19 vaccine passport app ahead of its planned implementation on Sept. 1, the province’s Health Minister said. Alberta businesses, many of which believed they were on the brink of financial failure during the first wave of COVID-19, left millions of dollars worth of government assistance on the table, a new report found. And, Edmonton Catholic Schools are reinstating COVID-19 safety measures at its year-round schools, which resume tomorrow. Experts say healthy Canadians do not yet need booster COVID-19 shots, saying those vaccines should go to poorer countries that lack supply.
Amid a global vaccine gap, the World Health Organization is calling for a moratorium on boosters. With 81 per cent of the eligible population having at least one dose, Canada is among the leading countries for COVID-19 vaccinations. Although some specific groups may benefit from a third dose, there’s little evidence to justify giving booster shots to healthy people who have received two doses, experts say. Made in Canada: Canada, whose life-sciences industry has been decimated over the last three decades, signed a memorandum of understanding with Moderna to build an mRNA vaccine manufacturing plant in the country within the next two years.
