Kuenssberg savages Keir Starmer on 'abandoning' pledges 'People are entitled to be angry!'

BBC's Laura Kuenssberg argued that the pressure Labour Party leader Sir Keir Starmer is facing from the Left within the party was warranted. During an interview at the Labour Party conference, Ms Kuenssberg said it appeared the Labour leader was shifting away from commitments he made prior to being elected on nationalisation and minimum wage costs.

Ms Kuenssberg argued those on the Left within the party were entitled to be "cross" with these decisions.

She said: "Aren't the people on the Left entitled to be cross about some of the things that you have done?

"You sprung new changes on the Unions and they would normally expect to be consulted.

"You have abandoned what people believe to be a commitment, a personal commitment from you, for nationalisation.

"Also, even though once upon a time you posed with a banner saying McDonald's workers should be paid £15 an hour, you are now saying the Party should not be saying that.

"Aren't people on the Left actually quite entitled to be cross about some of the decisions you have made?"

Sir Keir insisted that every action he was making was in service of the goal of getting the Labour Party in power.

He also denied making a commitment to nationalisation.

He said: "I made it very clear when I was standing for election that the central mission was to get a Labour Government.

"Every single stump speech I did ended by saying you have heard lots of ideas from me and other candidates but none of them will come to fruition if we don't win.

"I didn't make commitments to nationalisation, I never made commitments to nationalisation.

"I made commitments to common ownership, they are worlds apart.

"The central thing is this, those commitments I made, those pledges I made are values I hold dear.

"The world has changed since they were made but now the question is how do we apply them in the reflected circumstances that we find ourselves going into."

Sir Keir closed by saying: "The most important pledge I made was to turn out Labour Party that would be fit for Government and able to win a general election.
