The Duke of Cambridge made the comments during the Who Cares Wins award ceremony that was hosted by The Sun on Tuesday. The event was held at the roundhouse in Camden, north London and was attended by luminaries from the worlds of TV, sport and politics. Among the guests were Prime Minister Boris Johnson and former footballer David Beckham.

       “Every day, our emergency services deal with high pressure and challenging situations,” the Duke said.

       “While most of us would, quite naturally, turn away and seek safety, our emergency responders rise to the occasion, running straight toward the danger to provide vital — and often, life-saving — support.”

       “Very modestly, they will tell you that this does not make them heroes and it is all done in the name of duty.

       “But sometimes a situation will occur that tests the resolve of even the most experienced responder.”

       The future King continued: “In times like these, they must face their deepest fears and find the most astonishing level of courage to overcome the obstacles in front of them. And that is truly heroic.

       “The winners of this award faced just such a situation, but I am delighted to say they survived and are here this evening.”

       The 39-year-old Prince wore a black velvet suit with matching loafers to the event.

       His crisp white button-down was adorned with a black bowtie.

       The Who Cares Wins Awards were instigated in 2017 and highlight the dedicated work of doctors, nurses, midwives, surgeons, volunteers, researchers and charity workers.

       This year, the gala teamed up with The National Lottery and NHS Charities Together.

       Prince William has experience of emergency situations in his former job as an air ambulance pilot.

       After leaving the RAF, the Duke of Cambridge started a job as a civilian ambulance pilot for the East Anglian Air Ambulance, where he worked between March 2015 and July 2017.

       The job entailed long hours and dealing with distressing situations, often involving children.
