Coronavirus Update: Canadians travelling to U.K. exempt from quarantine

There were 79 deaths announced, down 14 per cent over the same period. At least 1,005 people are being treated in hospitals and 1,428,958 others are considered recovered.

       Canada’s inoculation rate is 10th among countries with a population of one million or more people.

       Coronavirus in Canada In Quebec, the owners of the Herron long-term care facility, where 47 people died during the first wave of COVID-19, will not face criminal charges. A report commissioned by the province accused the home of “organizational negligence” that resulted in a failure to meet residents’ needs. Meanwhile, digital security analysts say the province’s vaccine passport app is secure. Nova Scotia is reporting one new case of COVID-19. Meanwhile, Cape Breton University announced it will expect students and staff to have both doses of a COVID-19 vaccine by Oct. 15 and is asking for proof of vaccination. In Ontario, Carleton, Western, and McMaster universities said unvaccinated people without exemptions will not be able to access their campuses. They issued an October deadline for students and staff to get fully vaccinated. And, the province’s public health units say they are exploring regional approaches to COVID-19 vaccination policies. British Columbia has seen a sudden jump in the number of people registering for and making appointments for the first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine in the first two days of this week. And, the province has not followed others in allowing postsecondary schools to mandate that their students either be vaccinated or take a rapid COVID-19 test to return to class on campus next month. Coronavirus around the world Canada and other countries are moving to the United Kingdom’s “green” list for travel as visitors who pose a low risk to public health, said the British Department for Transport. Japan said no safety or efficacy issues had been identified after 1.63 million doses of Moderna Inc’s COVID-19 vaccine were pulled from circulation on Thursday over contamination reports. The move was just a precaution. New York Governor Kathy Hochul revealed 12,000 more people died of COVID-19 in the state than originally reported. Coronavirus and business Five major long-term care operators announced today that they will require COVID-19 vaccination for all staff this fall, and that any staff unvaccinated by Oct. 12 will be placed on unpaid leave of absence.

       Thousands of long-term care residents have died from COVID-19 since the pandemic began. The group of long-term care operators – Chartwell Retirement Residences, Extendicare, Responsive Group Inc., Revera Inc., and Sienna Senior Living – said unvaccinated staff are more likely to bring COVID-19 into work as rates of infection rise.
