Coronavirus in Canada Nine universities and colleges in Alberta will require proof of COVID-19 vaccination to enter their campuses. A nurse told a Quebec coroner’s inquest today that a Montreal-area long-term care home – that saw dozens of deaths during the first wave – was understaffed and lacked proper equipment even before COVID-19. British Columbia’s COVID-19 vaccine passport system comes into effect today amid the fourth wave of the pandemic in the province. Prince Edward Island is declaring a COVID-19 outbreak in a school for the first time since the start of the pandemic. Across Canada, protesters have gathered at hospitals in opposition to pandemic-related restrictions. The federal Liberals and New Democrats pledged to criminalize protesters that block hospitals or harass health care workers.
A group calling itself Canadian Frontline Nurses held what it dubbed “silent vigils” on Monday in response to public-health restrictions aimed at slowing the spread of COVID-19, which they call “tyrannical measures and government overreach.” NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh said a federal government can’t ban protests, nor can it limit where people can demonstrate, but pointed to the Criminal Code as a means to dissuade such demonstrations from happening. Trudeau outlined an identical pledge of criminal sanctions for anyone blocking access to hospitals, vaccine clinics, testing centres, pharmacies and abortion clinics, and those intimidating or harassing health care workers. Inside L6P: It’s been five months since the federal government placed a ban on direct flights to and from India. As Canada counts down to its Sept. 20 election, the country’s Indian diaspora is also looking anxiously at Sept. 21 – the date the travel ban is set to be reviewed.
