Coronavirus in Canada In Alberta, the province’s top doctor says the “Open For Summer” plan, in which all COVID-19 restrictions were lifted in July, set the stage for a crushing fourth wave. Meanwhile, doctors have issued warnings that the province’s health system could fail within four weeks. And, a Calgary pastor who was found guilty of contempt after deliberately violating COVID-19 health orders was unrepentant at his sentencing. Plus, Calgary-based Providence Therapeutics says it has signed two contracts to have its developmental mRNA vaccine for COVID-19 manufactured in Canada. Ontario has issued guidance for enforcement of the province’s new COVID-19 vaccine passport system, which begins next Wednesday. Businesses and patrons who do not abide by the rules could be fined. And, tens of thousands of people in the province are experiencing post-COVID-19 symptoms, a science advisory group says. The most common symptoms include fatigue, shortness of breath, general pain, anxiety and depression. Meanwhile, the province reported 757 new COVID-19 cases and no new deaths from coronavirus today. British Columbia is mandating that health care workers be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 as a condition of employment by Oct. 26. Nova Scotia was scheduled to implement Phase 5 of its reopening plan on Wednesday – which would have removed most of the public-health measures that have been in place since the onset of the pandemic – but Health Minister Michelle Thompson said the plan would be delayed until at least Oct. 4. Saskatchewan has re-enacted an emergency order to deal with a surge of COVID-19 hospitalizations. The order gives the government the power to redirect health care workers to areas experiencing pressure from COVID-19. Quebec reported 633 new cases of COVID-19 and seven more deaths attributed to the coronavirus. Coronavirus around the world British Prime Minister Boris Johnson outlined the government’s latest pandemic strategy on Tuesday – which will drop vaccine passports, mandatory face mask rules and work-from-home regulations. And, Britain will begin a COVID-19 vaccine booster program for older and more vulnerable people soon, the Prime Minister said. A Kremlin spokesman told reporters that Russian President Vladimir Putin is “absolutely healthy,” but will self-isolate after he came in contact with someone who contracted COVID-19. Coronavirus and business Today: Vaccine rollouts are set to power a rebound in global oil demand after a three-month slide owing to the spread of the Delta variant of COVID-19 and pandemic restrictions, the International Energy Agency said.
