Five victims suffered superficial injuries and were taken to hospital for treatment.
Two are believed to have been discharged from the University of Wales Hospital after several hours, while the others continue to be cared for by doctors.
Several eyewitnesses said there were huge numbers of emergency vehicles on the scene on City Road.
The Welsh Ambulance Service confirmed paramedics and members of the Hazardous Area Response Team attended.
A South Wales Police spokesperson said: "There is quite a large police presence in the area and members of the public are advised to stay away while it is being dealt with."
They also confirmed emergency services attended an address of the street at 2.44pm after reports of an assault.
'STAY AWAY'
Reports on social media suggest there may have been an acid attack, but this has not been confirmed by police.
One person who was in the area at the time said: "It was absolutely mental on City Road.
"A bloke said he'd had acid thrown on him and was using milk to neutralise it."
Officers are now appealing for information, or anyone with mobile phone or dashcam footage to come forward, quoting reference 2100312749.
