Food basket a relief for many

"The items listed are adequate but we hope that they will be given more frequently, perhaps once a week. People also need fresh ingredients like vegetables, fish and chicken to make their meals, so perhaps these items could be considered. I also hope that the level of bureaucracy will be reduced to make it easier for the aid recipients. This food basket programme is certainly a relief for those in need. My residents association (RA) has already prepared a list of eligible recipients. When such aid is handed out, the RA for each zone will be responsible for distribution."

Ali Jaafar, Segambut Subzone 2 chairman, Kuala Lumpur

“I had to quit my job at a computer manufacturing factory in Singapore due to the border closure. This pandemic has really left a deep impact on me. I’ve been using my savings little by little to make sure that there is food on the table for my wife and me. The food basket programme is much appreciated by people like me because now I can save some money on buying basic necessities."

Tan Shen Ling, 55, unemployed, Johor

"The RM300,000 allocation for the MPs to distribute food baskets to the people is a good move. With many people now putting up white flags outside their homes, this initiative comes at the right time to ease their woes."

Stanley Woo Chee Seng, 49, insurance manager, Perak

“I am a retiree and no longer earn an income. My three children, who are in their 30s, live with me. The food basket, especially the 5kg of rice, can sustain us for over two weeks. We are glad for the timely government aid."

       M. Gopalan, 66, retired contract driver, Penang

"This food basket aid from the government is definitely welcome. I would like to suggest that the food basket also include eggs as they are a good and cheap source of protein, especially for families with young children."

Nurul Izzati Azman, 26, nature guide, Penang

"We welcome the programme but would like for the food baskets to be delivered straight to the affected areas via a one-stop centre. Previously, we accepted vouchers from donors to redeem groceries at hypermarkets but with movement restricted now, it’s better to send the food baskets straight to the affected areas. The baskets contain crucial basic necessities, though including baby and adult diapers could help too. I also hope the government will reduce bureaucracy regarding the eligibility of aid recipients."

Rashid Samad, PPR Intan Baiduri Residents Association chairman, Kuala Lumpur

"The items provided under the food basket initiative such as rice, sugar, tea and coffee might be basic necessities but they are definitely a great help, especially during this time when Covid-19 is still a threat among us."

       N. Jayaranan, 58, self-employed, Selangor

"It’s a difficult time for the people. Some of us cannot even afford to buy rice. This food basket initiative will ease the burden of many people who are stressed by the impact of the pandemic."

Raja Jaafar Raja Ali, 56, retiree and father of three, Johor
