KOTA KINABALU: Sabah is hoping that the Defence Ministry will allow the state to relax the standard operating procedures (SOPs) under the first phase of the National Recovery Plan.

Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) president Datuk Seri Yong Teck Lee said "give Mindef another day" after Senior Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob insisted that all states must follow rules set by Putrajaya.

Yong was referring to the Senior Minister's objections on the SOPs that needs approval from the National Security Council (NSC). The Defence Ministry is part of the council.

"His (Ismail Sabri) latest views reconfirm that he wants uniformity for the sake of `sameness' without taking into consideration local conditions and the pandemic situation in each geographical location," said Yong, whose party is part of the ruling Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) government.

"The fact that some people continue to dine in at eateries, while strictly observing SOP, shows that people are confident and supportive of the recovery plan of the Sabah government by relaxing the lockdown in Sabah," he said, referring to some eateries opening up their dine-ins on Thursday (July 1) despite doubts whether its allowed.

"Once people are confident that they will not be infected at eateries, which observe strict SOPs, people will want freedom.

"Some people need the freedom in the reopening of the economy to survive," Yong, a former chief minister, in response to Ismail Sabri's statement.

Ismail Sabri reiterated that each state should follow the basic rules set by Putrajaya.

He said they were aware every state was different and one system may not suit all, adding that it was the reason leeway was given to Sabah and Sarawak on SOPs previously.

"But the basics can’t be different or else every state will announce their own SOPs, which will be difficult (to manage)," Ismail Sabri said.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor announced that SOPs be relaxed for certain economic and social sectors with effect from June 29 but hit a snag when SOPs were not yet approved by the Federal Government.

The issue turned into a political storm with leaders from both sides of the political divide in Sabah supporting Hajiji's move and told Putrajaya to listen to Sabah's call to restart the economy.
