PADANG BESAR: A man armed with a machete was shot dead when he ran amok and attacked policemen in an incident in Jalan Kaki Bukit.
OCPD Supt Saifudin Aslin Abbas said a team had gone to a house at about 5.30pm on Thursday after receiving a report of domestic violence.
“The 55-year-old man refused to come out, forcing the police to enter the house through the windows.
“The suspect, who was armed with a machete, acted aggressively and injured a cop, forcing the police to fire a warning shot.
“However, the suspect continued to act aggressively, which forced the police to fire a second shot (which hit the man) in self-defence and to protect his children at the scene,” he told reporters yesterday.
Supt Saifudin said the man died at the scene and the body was taken to Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital in Alor Setar for an autopsy.
In ALOR SETAR, a man died after the motorcycle he was riding skidded on the road in his attempt to escape from the police in Bedong, near Sungai Petani.
Kedah police chief Comm Datuk Kamarul Zaman Mamat said the suspect, in his 30s, was wanted by the police for defacing a wall at Istana Anak Bukit.
“At 3pm on Thursday, the suspect, who was riding a black motorcycle, had painted the palace wall with the word ‘SAMR’.
“About two hours later, he was believed to have gone to the Kota Setar police station where he punched a policewoman on duty, causing her to suffer facial injuries, before fleeing,” he said in a statement.
Police, said Comm Kamarul, managed to track down the suspect in Gurun, near Sungai Petani, but he tried to flee.
“As he tried to escape the police, his motorcycle skidded. He was injured and pronounced dead at the scene,” he said.
The body was sent to Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital for a post-mortem. — Bernama
