Daily Covid-19 cases remain above 15,000

       PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia’s Covid-19 daily cases remained above the 15,000 mark, with another 17,236 new infections.

       The past three days saw the number of cases on a downward trend since recording an all-time high of 20,889 cases on Aug 6.

       In his daily Covid-19 statement, Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said 97.8% or 16,864 cases yesterday were mild or asymptomatic.

       Dr Noor Hisham said of the total cases, 73.6% involved those with no history of receiving any Covid-19 vaccination.

       About 55% were detected from contact tracing activities, 34% from sporadic infections while 10% were linked to clusters.

       There were 29 imported cases.

       Selangor had the highest number of new cases with 5,740, followed by Kuala Lumpur (1,567 cases), Kedah (1,328), Sabah (1,247), Johor (1,232) and Negri Sembilan (1,215).

       The national infectivity rate as of Sunday was 1.07. Kelantan had the highest infectivity rate at 1.25, followed by Terengganu (1.19) and Sabah (1.17).

       Dr Noor Hisham also said there were 212 new deaths, pushing the death toll to 10,961.

       The fatalities comprised 186 Malaysians and 26 foreigners. Sixteen were brought-in-dead cases.

       Selangor had the most deaths with 76, followed by Johor with 24 and Kedah with 20.

       A total of 1,095 patients are in intensive care, with 579 of them on ventilator support.

       Meanwhile, 15,187 patients were discharged, bringing the number of recoveries to 1,041,585.

       Dr Noor Hisham said 36 new clusters were detected nationwide.

       They included 19 workplace-related clusters with 718 cases linked to them. Another 13 were community outbreaks with 254 confirmed infections.

       To date, there are 1,232 active clusters nationwide.
