GEORGE TOWN: Police here have arrested two drug-trafficking suspects and seized RM671,096 worth of drugs and equipment following raids on the island and mainland.

Penang deputy police chief Datuk Fisol Salleh said in the first raid at a terrace house in Bukit Tengah at 10pm Sunday (Aug 8), a 56-year-old foreign man was arrested.

The raiding team from the Bukit Aman Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department then moved to Gelugor, where a 31-year-old woman, also a foreigner, was arrested in a condominium at 10.50pm the same night.

"We seized 18.58kg of syabu (methamphetamine) from the house worth RM668,772, 12g of Erimin 5 pills worth RM690, 50 bullets, 56 litres of chemicals, and various equipment used to process drugs.

"At the condominium, we found 45.4g of syabu worth RM1,634.

"The man's passport expired in 2017 while the woman's was still valid.

"We believe they have been trafficking syabu since last August, and obtained their supply from the Klang Valley for local distribution," Fisol said during a press conference at the state police contingent headquarters Thursday (Aug 12).

Other items seized in both houses included cash in various currencies as well as jewellery worth RM48,730.

Both suspects have since been remanded to facilitate investigations under various sections of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 as well as Section 8(a) of the Weapons Act 1960 and Section 15(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63.

The duo were among 10 others, comprising seven men and three women aged from 27 to 65 years old arrested in Selangor and Penang.

It is believed that those arrested included the group leader, seven syndicate members, and two suppliers from the Klang Valley.
