PETALING JAYA: Umno has rejected Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin's bipartisan offer and urged Malaysians to remain calm until the Yang di-Pertuan Agong appoints a new premier under Article 40(2) of the Federal Constitution.

       Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said offers made by an “illegitimate” prime minister cannot be considered, as it is considered “open bribery”.

       "Umno is advising Malaysians to remain calm until the Yang di-Pertuan Agong carries out his duties and Constitutional responsibilities under Article 40(2) of Federal Constitution to appoint a new prime minister among MPs," said Ahmad Zahid in a statement on Friday (Aug 13).

       The Bagan Datuk MP also chided Muhyiddin for openly admitting that he lost his parliamentary majority on live telecast.

       "Umno expresses appreciation towards the Pagoh MP's open admission that he no longer has majority support of MPs.

       "With this admission, the Pagoh MP is no longer legitimate to carry out his duties as prime minister under Article 43(4) of the Constitution."

       On Friday (Aug 13) night, the Pakatan Harapan presidential council also rejected Muhyiddin's bipartisan offer and pressured for his resignation as prime minister, citing Article 43(4) of the Constitution.

       Earlier Friday (Aug 13), Muhyiddin, in a special address, had sought bipartisan support from the Opposition in order to bring the nation out of the political crisis.

       He said if the Opposition agrees to bipartisan support, a special Dewan Rakyat sitting will be convened soon to table a confidence motion.

       Muhyiddin had also assured that he will make decisions that are honourable and constitutional in his attempt to solve the ongoing political crisis.
