PETALING JAYA: Former deputy speaker Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said has pledged to provide the best service she could as an MP to her constituents in Pengerang, Johor, despite not being appointed as a Cabinet minister.

       "As the Pengerang MP, I will continue providing the best service to the society in the Pengerang parliamentary constituency, and I will bring the voice of the people to the Dewan Rakyat.

       "For the people in Pengerang, our struggle against Covid-19 isn't over, and let's unite in bringing back prosperity among the people and help to recover the economy in Pengerang," she said in a Facebook post on Friday (Aug 27).

       Azalina hoped that with the increasing challenges of Covid-19, the government will prioritise regular Malaysians, so that the comfort and prosperity enjoyed by the people prior to the pandemic can be returned.

       At the same time, Azalina also welcomed Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob and the Opposition's commitment to strengthen Parliament, ensure judiciary independence, institutional reforms and good governance in a joint statement on Aug 25.

       "I'm honoured to contribute and support reform initiatives that are intended to be implemented by the government led by Ismail Sabri."

       Azalina also hopes that principles of the constitutional monarchy and the parliamentary democracy system will continue to be a guide to the government and all MPs, regardless of their political affiliation.

       There have been strong calls by the Opposition to appoint Azalina as a Cabinet minister.

       Azalina recently garnered praise after she resigned as deputy speaker, citing reasons of the conflict of roles and responsibilities between being an Umno supreme council member and an MP in a ruling coalition.
