KUALA LUMPUR: A car thief not only ran over his girlfriend and partner-in-crime, he also abandoned her in his haste to escape from the police.
However, his attempt was in vain as he was arrested later.
The incident on Aug 26 started when a police team spotted a car suspiciously parked in Cheras.
When they approached the vehicle, they saw a woman removing items from the bonnet.
“Spotting the police, the male suspect reversed his car, running over the woman.
“When ordered to stop, the suspect sped off,” said Kuala Lumpur CID chief Senior Asst Comm Saiful Annuar Yusoff yesterday.
One shot was fired at the car but the suspect managed to escape.
The 20-year-old woman, whom the police have since identified as the suspect’s girlfriend and accomplice, suffered light injuries and was brought to the hospital.
She was then arrested to assist investigations.
“On Aug 30, at around 7.50pm, the police arrested the 32-year-old man in Cyberjaya.
“He then brought the police to several locations, where 11 cars that had previously been reported stolen were found.
“The cars were reported stolen within Kuala Lumpur and Selangor between 2019 and 2021. The value has been estimated to be around RM130,000,” he said.
Investigations showed that the cars were stolen to be stripped down as spare parts, which were then resold via social media.
