PUTRAJAYA: The last day for walk-in Covid-19 vaccinations in the Klang Valley will be on Sept 15.

Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Seri Dr Adham Baba said Klang Valley residents who have not received their vaccination can get their jabs at selected health clinics from Sept 16 onwards.

“The number of people who have yet to be vaccinated in the Klang Valley is very small; you can see this from the number of PPV (vaccination centre) attendees of late.

“Taking this into consideration, I would like to announce that the walk-in programme in the Klang Valley will be stopped from Sept 15 onwards,” said Dr Adham, who is the co-chairman of the Covid-19 Immunisation Task Force.

Dr Adham said vaccination walk-ins in other states will remain for now.

“Those in other states are advised to follow the announcements made by their state health departments for the walk-in programmes there,” he said.

Currently, about 97.8% of the Klang Valley’s adult population are fully vaccinated.

On another matter, Dr Adham said nearly 250,000 university students in the country have not registered for vaccination.

“Based on checks with the Higher Education Ministry, some 195,000 students in public institutions, or 37.% of them, do not have Covid-19 vaccination records.

“Similarly, some 51,000 or 10.2% of students from private higher learning institutions have not registered for vaccinations.”

As of Sept 7, Dr Adham said 547,595 university students in the country were fully vaccinated.

On the country’s lower daily vaccination numbers, Dr Adham said this was a positive indication.

“This shows that many of us in Malaysia have already been vaccinated.

“Therefore, we should expect to see a lower rate in the next few weeks,” he told reporters during a symbolic handover ceremony with Khairy Jamaluddin, who is now the Health Minister.

The two ministers had their posts swapped in the new Cabinet.

Khairy said the two ministries would continue their close cooperation, especially on the development of Malaysia’s own vaccines.

“Both ministries will continue cooperating even beyond the National Covid-19 Immunisation Programme.

“This includes Mosti’s big task of developing Malaysia’s first vaccine for humans. We have already developed vaccines for animals before.

“This is important to ensure that in the coming years, we don’t need to procure vaccines from other countries,” said Khairy, who also joked about how Dr Adham was his first boss during his days in Umno Youth.

“Dr Adham was chairman of Umno Youth’s education bureau and I was the secretary.” said Khairy.
