PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia’s number of Covid-19 daily cases went down to 16,073 yesterday, its lowest since Aug 2.

Cases in the Klang Valley continued their downward trajectory, with Selangor reporting 1,947 infections, Kuala Lumpur reporting 398 while Putrajaya had 16.

The combined total of 2,361 cases for the Klang Valley is a huge drop from the peak in early August, when the region’s daily cases reached as high as 11,000.

Sarawak is still the state with the most cases, reporting 3,522 new infections.

In his daily Covid-19 statement, Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said the country’s cumulative total number of cases now stands at 1,995,771.

Of yesterday’s 16,073 cases, 15,840 or 98.5% were mild or asymptomatic infections.

“Another 233 cases or 1.5% were Categories 3 to 5 infections,” he said.

In the same 24-hour span, 24,813 patients in the country were discharged. A total of 1,756,526 people in Malaysia have recovered from Covid-19 thus far.

The Health Ministry also identified 32 new Covid-19 clusters.

The ministry’s Covid-19 tracker website CovidNow showed that coronavirus death cases are on a decline, with the average number of deaths in the past seven days, up to Sept 12, at 99.

This was also on a downward trend, after the seven-day average for Covid-19 deaths was at a peak of 300 daily cases in early August.

The number of active Covid-19 cases also continued their downward trend, with 237,277 cases reported on Sunday, a reduction of more than 2,000 cases from the previous day.

Of the total active cases, 83.1% are patients with mild infections and who are undergoing home quarantine. Another 10.8% are under isolation at low-risk quarantine centres. About 5.5% are hospitalised, while another 0.6% are at an intensive care unit (ICU).

The national ICU utilisation rate is currently at 83.9%.

Three states have ICUs operating at overcapacity: Kedah (125.2%), Kelantan (101.8%) and Penang (101.8%). The Klang Valley’s ICU usage rate is at 82.5%.
