Rumour that senior citizens must surrender driving licence not true, says Dr Wee

PETALING JAYA: Information circulating online claiming that individuals aged 70 and up need to surrender their driving license to the Road Transport Department (JPJ) is false, says Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong (pic).

“Actually, Section 30 of the Road Transport Act 1987 allows drivers to voluntarily surrender their license due to unsatisfactory health conditions which may endanger other road users,” said the Transport Minister in a Facebook post on Sunday (Sept 26).

He added that denying senior citizens a driving license is the last resort and referred to a statement he made on Saturday (Sept 25).

On Saturday, Dr Wee called for a holistic approach to be adopted to determine the driving ability of individuals, including the need for mobility and other socio-economic factors aside from the age factor alone.

He added that it was also the responsibility of individuals with declining health to surrender their licenses and said that he hopes that all stakeholders will create an effective and inclusive plan for the public.
