PETALING JAYA: Scammers are now masquerading as their victim's employers to trick people for profit, says Bukit Aman.

Bukit Aman Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) director Comm Datuk Mohd Kamarudin Md Din said police have detected a new modus operandi being used by phone scammers.

"To fool victims, the scammers would use profile photos that are the same or similar to that of their employers. They will then be instructed to purchase 'Google Play Gift' cards that can be bought at convenience stores.

"The victims will then be instructed to pass the scammers the pin numbers of the cards. As of now, two cases have been detected with losses of around RM30,250," he said in a statement on Friday (Oct 1).

The victim would only realise that they had been scammed after finding out that the numbers did not belong to their employers following a check.

Comm Mohd Kamarudin urged all to always be wary of unrecognised numbers and to always verify information before responding, especially if it involves any monetary implications.
