Officials say Waukegan man tried to escape from courthouse and jail on same day

A Waukegan man darted from a Lake County courtroom Tuesday during a hearing and injured a police officer attempting to stop him, according to the Lake County sheriff’s office, which said the man later to tried also to flee from the jail.

Anthony J. Cauley, 29, is facing felony charges of escape and aggravated battery to a police officer following the Tuesday incidents that began at the Lake County Courthouse tower.

Police said Cauley had a case management hearing on a May charge for aggravated battery to a Deerfield police officer. Cauley was out on bail, but court records indicate he failed a test for illegal substances. During the hearing, the judge ordered him into custody for violating the terms of his bond, police said.

After hearing that he was going to jail, Cauley bolted from the courtroom, and a court security officer and a Highland Park police sergeant who was in court on another matter gave chase, authorities said.

As Cauley ran into the hallway, reports said, he encountered the Highland officer and elbowed the officer in the head. The officer and other court security personnel were eventually able to subdue Cauley.

The Highland police officer was taken to a hospital for examination of his head injury. Officials said Cauley complained that he was having a heart issue, so he was transported to a hospital. He was treated, and then brought back to the jail to be booked.

However, at the jail, Cauley attempted to flee through an open doorway, but was again subdued by officers. The sheriff’s office said the door did not directly lead to the outside of the jail.

Cauley was ordered held without bond, authorities said.

“This is an example of the unpredictability nature of what our staff encounter on a daily basis,” Sheriff John Idleburg said. “Battering a police officer is unacceptable, plain and simple. I am thankful the Highland Park sergeant was not seriously injured and thankful my staff was not injured.”
