TOKYO -- The Tokyo Metropolitan Government announced 143 coronavirus infections in the Japanese capital on Oct. 7, the sixth day in a row the daily figure has fallen below 200.
Tokyo reported 149 new positive cases on Oct. 6.
In the first week of October, Tokyo saw an average of 154.3 new infections per day. The capital recorded 31,842 total coronavirus cases in September, for an average of 1,061.4 cases per day, down sharply from the 125,606 total infections -- an average of 4,051.8 cases per day -- tallied in August. Average daily case numbers declined steeply over the course of September, from 1,243.7 in the first week to 340.9 in the fourth.
By Oct. 6, 2,975 people had died of COVID-19 in Tokyo since the pandemic began in the spring of 2020.
Tokyo has recorded 376,496 infections to date, the most among Japan's 47 prefectures. As of Oct. 6, there were 751 COVID-19 patients hospitalized in Tokyo, 77 with severe symptoms.
