French MP threatens to tear up migration agreement blocking stowaways reaching UK

Angry over post-Brexit fishing licences, Jean-Pierre Pont said his country should consider scrapping the Touquet Treaty.

It would see an end to UK checkpoints on French soil and a return to chaotic scenes of stowaway migrants only being stopped once they reached Britain, where they could claim asylum.

Mr Pont said: “We would be happy to continue with Le Touquet as long as the UK respects the Brexit deals and gives what it has promised.”

Under the Brexit deal, French fishermen were told they would still be allowed access to UK waters, but would have to provide evidence they had fished there in the past.

French officials have accused the UK of violating the terms of the Brexit agreement but subsequent threats to blockade ports and even cut off the UK’s energy supply have been dismissed as sabre-rattling.
