YONG PENG: The Transport Ministry and transport industry players are prepared for the reopening of state borders, says Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong (pic).
The Transport Minister said that he had a discussion with all of the officers in the ministry on their preparations for the reopening of the border that is expected to begin soon.
"We are prepared (for the border reopening), including the aviation industry. For example, previously there were only about 22 flights to Sarawak in a week, now there are about 87 a week and it would be increased in stages.
"Before the Covid-19 pandemic, there were about 500 flights to and from the state in a week. This means that there is still a lot of space for us to gradually increase the capacity.
"We will adhere to the standard operating procedures issued by the National Security Council and at the same time, ensure that airlines are prepared," he said.
He added that the aviation industry is among the sectors that have been hit the most due to the pandemic and have been waiting for the travel restriction to be lifted.
Dr Wee said this after handing over food baskets to over 50 p-hailing riders here at Dewan Gemilang Yong Peng on Saturday (Oct 9).
He added that the public transport sector is also prepared to provide services despite not able to operate in full capacity.
"The same goes to express bus operators who have been looking forward for the travel restriction to be lifted so that they can operate again.
"Once the announcement for the reopening of state borders has been made, I am sure that all of these sectors, including those using ferries and other sea transport would be fully prepared," he said.
He noted that the ministry would be monitoring the preparation and operation of the sectors involved.
