       A group of about two dozen protesters gathered outside a St. John’s jail Saturday to demand better mental health care and addiction supports for inmates.

       Courtney Pike organized the demonstration after her brother, Greg Pike, died by suicide almost four weeks ago while an inmate at Her Majesty’s Penitentiary.

       His is at least the sixth inmate death in the province to spark an investigation or review since 2017.

       Pike says her brother struggled with addictions and mental health issues, and needed help that isn’t offered through incarceration.

       Joanne Power drove over three hours from Gander to attend the protest because her son has been in and out of the prison system, and she wanted to stand with the Pike family.

       Newfoundland and Labrador’s Department of Justice and Public Safety did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
