How a pair of police trousers pushed Princess Alexandra to giggles

Princess Alexandra, the Honourable Lady Ogilvy, is best known for her royal work and as the Queen’s cousin. She is patron or president of more than 100 organisations concerning a wide range of interests from the arts to healthcare. During the course of her career as a working member of the Royal Family, she has seen various highs and lows - one such high was an incident involving a pair of the police constable’s trousers according to the founders of Operation Encompass and Silver Stories.

Operation Encompass and Silver Stories are two charities created by retired headteacher Elisabeth Carney-Haworth and her husband, retired police sergeant, David.

Operation Encompass is a charity focused on domestic abuse experienced by children, while Silver Stories encourages children to read to the elderly to help with loneliness.

Prior to the couple’s charitable endeavours, they met Princess Alexandra.

During this exchange, a pair of police trousers became the spark which caused all to descend into giggles.

Mrs Carney-Haworth told Express.co.uk: “We actually met Princess Alexandra at a royal garden party in 2010.

“Before my husband retired from the police we were invited to the party.”

Mr Carney-Haworth wanted to wear his police uniform to the event - which included a tunic and a pair of woollen trousers.

However, he did not have a pair of smart woollen trousers and instead only had polyester ones used during a policeman’s work.

Mr Carney-Haworth visited the stores - where police can collect uniform items.

However, the seamstress did not have any woollen trousers to go with the tunic.

The former headteacher told Express.co.uk: “The lady told him she did not have any formal trousers he would use but said he could not attend a royal garden party in his normal trousers at it would look awful.”

She added the seamstress came up with a solution - offering to alter a pair of formal trousers she did have, which had been ordered for the chief constable at the time, Stephen Otter.

But the former police constable was at least six feet tall - whereas Mr Carney-Haworth is not nearly as tall.

Therefore, the seamstress offered to alter a pair of trousers and she did so for him.

On the day the couple attended the royal garden party, the royal staff came up to the couple and asked if they had any interesting anecdotes they wished to share with Princess Alexandra.

Mrs Carney-Haworth said: “So my husband laughed and said ‘you can tell her I’m wearing the chief constable’s trousers.

“They replied saying ‘oh really’ and David explained what had happened and then they asked him to tell her that story.”

The charity’s founder revealed Princess Alexandra was told the story when they met her.

She added: “He told her the story and she loved it.

“She laughed once he explained how it had happened.”
