TOKYO -- The Tokyo Metropolitan Government reported 77 COVID-19 cases in the Japanese capital on Oct. 12, the fourth day in a row it has seen under 100 cases.
The capital recorded 49 cases on Oct. 10, falling below 50 for the first time since June 2020.
In the first week of October, Tokyo saw an average of 154.3 new infections per day. The capital recorded 31,842 total coronavirus cases in September, for an average of 1,061.4 cases per day, down sharply from the 125,606 total infections -- an average of 4,051.8 cases per day -- tallied in August.
By Oct. 11, 3,034 people had died of COVID-19 in Tokyo since the pandemic began in the spring of 2020.
Tokyo has recorded 376,902 infections to date, the most among Japan's 47 prefectures. As of Oct. 11, there were 567 COVID-19 patients hospitalized in Tokyo, 62 with severe symptoms.
