Emergency services dashed to Bridgewater Canal near Sale, Greater Manchester, at around 7.45am, where firefighters spent nearly two hours rescuing and trying to save the man. However, he died at the scene in circumstances police don't believe to be suspicious.

Part of the towpath near a tram stop and a park is closed as police remain at the scene, Manchester Evening News reports.

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Constabulary said: "We were called at 7.40am on Thursday 14 October to a report of a body in the canal near to Marsland Bridge, Sale.

"Police and Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service responded and a man was sadly confirmed dead at the scene.

"Enquiries are ongoing to identify the man and the circumstances behind the incident.

"There aren’t believed to be any suspicious circumstances at this time.

"Anyone with information should contact police online, if able, or via 101 quoting incident 686 of 14/10/2021."

Fire crews in two engines and a water incident unit rushed to the scene.

"Just after 7.45am on Thursday 14 October, firefighters were called to an incident near Marsland Road, Sale," a spokesman for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said.

"Two fire engines from Stretford and Sale fire stations, as well as the water incident unit from Eccles and the technical rescue unit from Ashton, quickly attended the scene.

"GMFRS crews were in attendance for around two hours."

Traffic on the A6144 which goes above the canal is congested due to the operation. Eastbound tailbacks go through the centre of Sale and westbound traffic is busy from the Barlow Moor area.
