A FAMILY whose five cars won't fit on their drive have complained about having to pay parking fees.

Angela Hammond and her family say their council won't allow them to buy a parking permit as they already have off-road parking.

The family in Aldershot, Hampshire, has five cars, two of which have to be parked on the street, Hampshire Live reports.

Mrs Hammond said Rushmoor Borough Council's parking restrictions mean the family-of-six - her and her husband, their two daughters, and her elderly parents - "can't park anywhere".

Mrs Hammond's elderly dad has a disabled parking bay outside the home they have lived in for 30 years.

But her daughter hasn't been unable to park on the street since 24-hour permit parking was introduced in March, 2020.

       PARKING ROW

She said: "The council said they asked every household about the permit parking but they certainly never came here.

"We didn't really have any issues with street parking before the permits were introduced, the only time was maybe on a Saturday when the football was on.

"You might not have been able to park outside your front door, but you could park within a close vicinity.

"But now we can't park anywhere and we're having to pay out parking tickets."

The family can't buy an annual permit, so one car has to be parked at Aldershot Railway Station.

The car park there is free after 5pm, but costs £5.50 for the whole day.

I've reached the point now where I'm quite tempted to park the car outside the house and keep getting tickets until they pay attention

The family can buy 204 visitor parking permits a year to park on the street, which cost £255 in total.

But an annual parking permit costs £50 and a second permit would cost £75.

Mrs Hammond added: "Once you've bought your limit for the year, you can't buy anymore which means you're not allowed visitors.

"So on Christmas Day my family won't be able to visit because we will have no visitor permits left.

       'REAL DIFFICULTIES'

"I have asked the council on numerous occasions if we can buy an annual permit, which I am more than happy to do, but they've said no.

"I've reached the point now where I'm quite tempted to park the car outside the house and keep getting tickets until they pay attention."

Councillor Maurice Sheehanm said council rules ban residents with off-road parking from buying parking permits.

She added: "These conditions apply to all our permit schemes in Rushmoor, irrespective of the number of vehicles at a property.

"Residents can buy up to 204 visitor parking sessions over a 12-month period.

"The purpose of the scheme is to help residents’ visitors park, and they shouldn’t be used to obtain permits for additional vehicles for a household, which some residents were doing when using the previous system.

"This caused real difficulties for other residents who rely on parking in the road because they do not have any off-street parking."
