Sir David, 69, was a fierce animal-rights campaigner and supported veterinary education with the Animal Welfare Foundation (AWF). Since the MP was allegedly murdered during a constituency meeting on Friday in Leigh-on-Sea, Essex, fundraisers have donated £5,274 to the charity, which tackles issues such as the welfare of farm animals, designer dogs and puppy breeding.

The Express' sister site, Essex Live, chose to raise money for AWR, a charity that was close to Sir David's heart and was set up by the British Veterinary Association (BVA).

Sir David's Westminster office was reportedly filled with budgies and fish, and many photographs show the politician holding dogs in his arms.

During his long-standing career, the Southend West MP campaigned for key animal welfare issues.

The father of five also led a long-running campaign to make Southend-on-Sea, the main town of his constituency, a city.

Boris Johnson announced yesterday that Southend will become a city following the MP's death.

Mr Johnson called Sir David one of the "nicest, kindest and most gentle" people in politics.
