PETALING JAYA: Fujitsu is optimistic that there will be plenty of technological opportunities to leverage on in the post-Covid-19 era.

In a recent statement, the Japan-based information and communication technology company said these various opportunities will serve as an enabler for digitisation.

“Fujitsu is dedicated to accelerating research and development (R&D) efforts and strengthening its global R&D structure, while promoting open innovation through industry-academia collaboration with global research institutions and researchers.

“This will enable the deployment of the world’s best technologies in different practical scenarios and offer new services as solutions for economic recovery, the advancement of society and environmental resilience.”

Meanwhile, at its second annual Fujitsu ActivateNow event, Fujitsu chief executive officer and digital transformation chief Takahito Tokita said there are many things that technology can accomplish, even in the areas of environment, social, or governance.

“We are committed to making society more sustainable and trust is essential for a sustainable society, as is the role of technology.

“However, technology alone cannot win trust, so we will continue to place value on communication with all stakeholders,” he said in his opening keynote address.

Takahito said contributing to the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDG) is now at the core of Fujitsu’s policy and management around the world.

“If these goals are achieved, the external economic effects are expected to create new market opportunities worth US$12 trillion (RM50 trillion) annually by 2030.”

Separately, Fujitsu Asia region head Koji Masuda said digital transformation has been happening before the pandemic and will “only be accelerated as a result of the pandemic.”

“Asia has the opportunity to bounce back from the pandemic and respond to challenges faced by each country. In that respect, we want to contribute to the success of our customers with our capabilities and strong technologies.”

According to the Fujitsu Future Insights Global Digital Transformation Survey Report 2021, 78% of respondents said they thought the importance of delivering value to society had increased as a result of the pandemic.

Meanwhile, 71% of business leaders planned to increase their contribution to society in line with the UNSDGs.

Additionally, Fujitsu chief technology officer Vivek Mahajan noted that society is now at an inflexion point.

“There is no going back to the world we once knew. I believe the speed of change is only going to accelerate moving forward.

“I am convinced that in these difficult times, technology has the power to help us solve the world’s most difficult challenges and transform society for the better. The role of technology as a change agent is only going to become more important.”
