The M1 northbound will be down to one lane until this evening following a collision involving eight vehicles between J22 and J23. Emergency services were deployed near the slip road at J22 for Coalville and Leicester at 10.52pm.

       Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service said six vehicles and two HGVs were involved in the incident.

       National Highways closed all lanes of the carriageway until 3am.

       Lane One of the M1 at J22 will remain shut until at least 8pm this evening as work is carried out to repair the road.

       Crews from across Coalville, Loughborough and Leicester were called to the scene.

       At 11.47pm (Wednesday) Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service tweeted: “Currently in attendance at a serious RTC on the M1 Northbound between J22 and J23 - 2 x HGV's and 6 vehicles spread across all 4 carriageways - no persons trapped. AVOID THE AREA.”

       National Highways has released a picture from the incident and shows a white van rammed into the back of a car.

       Large pieces of debris were seen scattered across the motorway.

       At this stage there are no reports of any injuries.

       National Highways tweeted shortly after 11pm: “Please be aware we have a full closure on the #M1 Northbound at #J22 as our crews are assisting Emergency Services with a collision.

       “Diversion routes are in place, long delays reported.”

       Overnight traffic cameras show long tailbacks on the M1 to Junction 23A near East Midlands Airport.

       A full closure of the M1 northbound from J22 remained in place for around four hours before two lanes reopened at 3am.

       Maintenance workers remain at the scene to repair the damage to the road surface.

       In a post on Twitter, National Highways wrote: “The full Closure at J22 M1 has now been removed.

       “A lane 1 closure will remain in place until tonight due to a section of carriageway requiring resurfacing.

       “This repair will take place after 2000hrs tonight the 21st October.”
