The Queen spent Wednesday night in hospital after announcing the cancellation of a visit to Northern Ireland. She had been due to take part in a two-day official trip, but doctors told her that she should rest at Windsor Castle. Buckingham Palace have sinced released a statement saying the monarch was admitted to hospital for "preliminary investigations".

She has since returned to Windsor Castle where she is said to be resting and in "good spirit."

The Queen was seen by specialists at the private King Edward VII’s hospital in central London, the hospital that looked after Prince Philip before his death in April.

It has been said that the visit was not to have been related to coronavirus.

The admission has sparked concern for the monarch's health, with calls for her to delegate the job to the younger royals.

Royal commentator Jennie Bond spoke to Jeremy Vine about how the monarch has started to hand over some of the strain to the younger royals.

Ms Bond said: "I can't see her stepping back in the same way that Prince Philip did, we hardly saw him at all, certainly not on official duties after he retired."

"Of course, she has handed an awful lot of duties to other members of the family."

"She doesn't travel abbroad now, they do all that stuff. We're seeing a lot more now of William and Catherine."

She added: "Prince Charles steps in and takes a lot of the responsibilities of the monarch now, such as investitures."

"So, she has delegated quite a lot of her responsibilities."

"I think that this new norm, this new world of Zoom and all the rest of it, the remote access that she can give to ambassadors and others, I think that's very welcomed."

"I think that she will continue to have meetings remotely like that to keep in touch."
