GEORGE TOWN: Police have opened an investigation paper over an alleged sexual assault claim in Komtar.

George Town OCPD Asst Comm Soffian Santong said the case would be investigated under Section 354 of the Penal Code for outrage of modesty.

"The woman came to the police station yesterday (Oct 22) and we recorded her statement. The case will be investigated.”

ACP Soffian said on Thursday (Oct 21), a video claiming that the police refused to record a report lodged by the victim went viral.

"Due to this, we began an internal investigation.

"The act of an officer in refusing to record a report from the public is a serious offence and there will be no compromise with any officer who commits such an offence.”

Earlier, a woman alleged that police had failed to act on a sexual assault incident which took place in a female restroom in Komtar on Oct 21.

It was said that the suspect was apprehended by the building's security team and turned over to the police.

It was alleged the police, however, refused to record the woman's account of events due to a lack of evidence and information, leading to the release of the suspect.
