West End Police Station on Torphichen Place in the capital was evacuated today due to the incident. Officers at the police station received a potentially hazardous explosive device. The device was handed in at the police station on Wednesday.
Specialists were later called to assess the device.
The station was therefore evacuated as a precaution.
The device was described as a piece of "unexploded historical ordinance".
A member of the public had handed in the device to police officers.
Despite evacuating the station, the device did not pose a threat.
A statement from the police said: "Around 10.35am, a member of the public handed in an item at West End Police Station, Edinburgh, which was believed to potentially be a piece of unexploded historical ordinance.
“The item was assessed by specialists, who established there was no risk or threat.
"The building had been evacuated as a precaution.”

Away from the incident in Edinburgh, Glasgow will hold the COP26 summit.
The summit will begin on October 31 and run until November 12.
During the summit, the UK Government hopes to confirm agreements aimed at halting climate change.
Despite being a global event, Russian President Vladimir Putin revealed he will not attend the summit.
Mr Putin told the Prime Minister he would attend due to the current coronavirus situation.
It is unclear if Chinese Premier, Xi Jinping will attend the summit.
Ahead of the event, Mr Johnson admitted it is unclear if the event will be a success.
Speaking to children before the summit, Mr Johnson said: "It is going to be very, very tough this summit.
He did, however, praise Australia for committing to reach net-zero by 2050.
He said: "They've done a heroic thing, the Australians, in getting to that commitment.
