GEORGE TOWN (Bernama): Police detained nine individuals, including a woman to assist investigations into the abduction of a Myanmar national in front of a factory in Batu Kawan near here on Oct 21.
Penang police chief Comm Datuk Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain said seven Myanmar men along with a local man and a local woman, aged between 21 and 48, were nabbed in a series of raids in the state and Kedah from Oct 25 to Oct 28.
"Police received a report from a local woman informing that her employee, a 26-year-old Rohingya man, was abducted by two men using a Perodua Viva car in front of the factory at 10.43pm on Oct 21.
"Following the report, the police conducted an investigation and managed to rescue the victim at a house in Kampung Sungai Layar, Sungai Petani in Kedah last Monday,” he told a press conference here.
Police also seized the car and RM3,000 cash, believed to have been paid by the victim’s family to the suspects.
Comm Mohd Shuhaily said the suspects, including the seven Myanmar men who hold valid United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) cards, have been remanded until Oct 31 under Section 3 of the Kidnapping Act 1961.- Bernama
